direct descendant of the California State Normal8,846

May 2, 1862. The California State Normal SchoolToros

Francisco's Minns Evening Normal School (foundedSonoma State University
in 1857) a normal school legislature dropped theRohnert Park
word "California" from the name of the San Jose1960
and Los Angeles schools, renaming them "State269

1921, the State Normal Schools became the StateSan Bernardino

In 1935, the State Teachers Colleges became theNCAA Division II
California State Colleges and were administeredCoyotes

in Sacramento. The Donahoe Higher Education ActCalifornia State University, Bakersfield
of 1960 gave the system greater autonomyBakersfield
from the State of California.1965
The postwar period brought a great expansion in375
the number of colleges in the system. Campuses7,113
in Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Long Beach82,714,822
were added between 1947 and 1949. Then sevenNCAA Division I
more were authorized to be built between 1957Roadrunners
and 1960. Six more campuses joined the systemCalifornia State University, San Marcos
